Really, it shouldn't...but it does! You see, when I chose the names for my boys (yes, I admit: I named both our boys. Channing liked the names, though), I chose "unusual" names; not your run of the mill, everyday names. Both Channing and I have unique names and had hoped to pass down unique names to our boys.
I chose the name "Tristan" in high school. I always said that if I ever had a boy, that would be his name. Lo and behold...I had a boy. Tristan was not a popular name at the time, so I stuck with it. I loved (love) the name and the meaning (bold). Since then, I've seen a few boys with the same name, but only a handful.
"Asher" I chose when Tristan was a brand new baby. I was reading my Bible one night before bed, came upon the name and felt so strongly that I would one day have a little boy named Asher. I immediately ran into the living room and woke Channing (who had fallen asleep watching some game of some sort) to tell him the great news. He kind of gave me a grunt and the next day told me that the name was "o.k.". I then told him how I found it and what the name meant (happy, blessed), and he really started liking it.
Ok...cut to Asher's actual birth. We stuck with the name and were SO PROUD of our unique, unusual name. Um, yeah. That lasted for like a month. Then I started meeting Asher after Asher after Asher. I think our church has like five! I meet Ashers at the gym, at the store, at church, in neighborhoods. It's CRAZY!
Well today I was looking at the Today Show's website to get a story for my health blog (I saw the story on the news this morning) and ran across a list of last year's most popular names. Guess where Tristan was??? 18!!!!!!!!!! Can you believe that?! 18!!! Asher was 76!!! 76!!! BOTH my boys were on last year's most popular names list. I am so disappointed! :(
Oh well. What can I do? I guess my next child will just have random letters drawn out of a hat. ;)

they are beautiful names still....both my kids were on the list too. well, kylie was on there, we spell it kylee and we use the double name (kylee anne). using double names is not "unique" in the south....however, jack's family in the pacific northwest love how "unusual" it is:)
I sooooo get you here! I adore my girls' names, and really put tons of thought and research into picking the "one." Both of my girls have older, classic names, which happen to be getting more popular--Stella Kate and Nora Beth. And, yes, we do the double name thing, too. :)
Stella was #291 in 2004, and is #244 for 2007. Nora was #245 in 2006, and #242 in 2007, but that doesn't include all the little Norahs out there. If you add those in, Nora is much more popular.
Wow. Can you tell that I'm a name nerd?? :) I got that info from http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/babynames, which tends to be the most accurate. You can even look up a name's popularity by state! I think you'll feel a little better about them when you check there, although that won't do a thing about the five Ashers at church!! :)
well, Hadley wasn't on that list you emailed me, though I am surprised. same thing happens to me all of the time. everyone I meet knows a hadley, and I thought i made it up...ha! go figure. oh well. all that matters is that WE love our kids and their names.
I know what you mean! I love their names....my 3 are also all on the list...and I've never met another landon, lillian (not called lily), and I've only met maybe one olivia.....who who knows where their gettin' their info!
oh i know the feeling.. when Ava was born, i had only heard of ONE other person (and she was 50) with that name.. now it's everywhere. oh well..
They are still such beautiful names! I think your Tristan and Asher are the only Tristan and Asher I know =)
When I named Sam, I knew that was a common name a while back but hadn't heard it in a while. Now there are several. And when I named Eli, I had only heard of one other Eli (Eli Manning) but now I have heard of about 5 others since. Oh well!
uhhh...i know exactly how you feel, annie!! i feel just as strongly about finding unique names with great meanings! i'm not even going to look at the list b/c i don't wanna know if gabe's name is on there! yes, i'm that pathetic! :) but, if it makes you feel better, i don't know ANY other tristan's OR asher's and i love love love both of those names! :)
I don't know any other Tristans or Ashers either. And Owen and Harris are both family names. Unusual, right? Well not according to PBK who now has them monogrammed on every page- dang it!
I understand completely. Every name we picked out was on that list. This is how we arrived at a double name (which I had said I would not do:)). I didn't want a trendy name because I was 1 of 3 Brandi's in my kindergarden class. My class was not that big. I guess we will just have to wait and see. BTW, we loved the crescent chicken!!! I need the recipe.
I don't know any other Tristans or Ashers- I love those names! We do family names so we get stuck on the list- Julia was my grandmother's name and Rebecca was my great grandmother's name, my mother's name and my middle name. It's just something we had to use!
